Any upmarket bar and club in St James´ is inevitably going to have to live up to certain expectations, and thankfully Aura manages to make any visit a happy one.

The first thing that you are struck by, unusually for a basement venue, is the sense of size, thanks to the high ceilings and the well-appointed bar. The second thing, more conventionally, is the excellence of the drinks and the friendliness of the service; try the so-called "6 inches" range of drinks which feature the particularly good "Porn Star", with lemon vodka, creme de peche and apple juice, or the excellent range of martinis.

Uniquely, the menu has been designed to be as entertaining to read as to order from, with lots of fun scrapbook touches and even some pictures of beautiful naked women.

As befits its classy and high-profile location, numerous A-listers have come in through the doors, many of whom have taken advantage of the relatively chilled-out feel to relax and let their hair down. Justin Timberlake, for instance, happily DJ´d while on a visit.

It´s tricky enough to get on the much-coveted guest list, so a word of warning: if you turn up at one in the morning after having been enjoying the evening elsewhere, you are probably not going to be allowed in.

Given the preponderance of beautiful and stylish people, you´re really going to want to dress to impress, which can only be intensified if you´re not on the proverbial list.
